Resources and Information for Students

The Prompt

As we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, students will choose to answer one of three prompts:

  • Prompt 1:  What do you value about American Constitutional democracy and what are your hopes for its future?

Prompt 2: How do you view your generation’s role and responsibility as an active participant in America’s democracy?

Prompt 3: What makes our democratic system of government strong and what are the challenges that weaken it?

The Goal of the contest

  • Engage young Americans in meaningful reflection on democracy and civic participation

  • Celebrate America's Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) through youth voices

  • Build bridges across differing viewpoints and experiences within communities

  • Recognize student excellence in civic thinking and writing

  • Strengthen democratic participation for the next generation

Why you should participate

This contest offers students a chance to engage deeply with fundamental questions about our democracy while developing critical thinking and writing skills. The district winner will be celebrated locally and, funding permitting, be invited to Washington, D.C. for a special recognition event in late spring 2026
